There is a chance that women may well experience joint pains after giving birth. This type of joint pain is called postpartum joint discomfort and is a condition that, although not unheard of, is not that common. The actual cause is baffling, with many questions unanswered as to why some mothers experience this condition, yet the majority do not. While it is not a common occurrence for new mothers to experience, it is still considered a 'normal' side effect after giving birth for the first time. The 9 months of gestation will for sure have an impact on the body as does the process of actually giving birth. Both, really take their toll on the mother's body, which is exasperated worse still, with the joint pain they experience after delivery. There are many hormones produced by the body to help the delivery process, that soften the bones around the pelvis area to help get the baby out quickly and without problems.

One of the most important hormones that the body releases during pregnancy is relaxin. Relaxin helps the body, specifically the ligaments in the pubic bone, to adapt to the developing infant. It helps the muscles become more flexible to accommodate the extra weight and size of the baby inside. The final stretch of the trimester is where the mother's body will be truly taken to the limit as the fully developed baby will put significant strain on the spine, tailbone and knees. The birthing process will also push the mother's body above its limits which is why it will take several months for the body to fully heal. This is where postpartum joint discomfort stems from.

It has been suggested by doctors, that the body can take up to 9 months to return back to normal after pregnancy. Many mothers would argue, that it never returns back to normal. During this time, especially the earlier months, new mothers might experience joint pains which will make even the simplest of activities taxing. Even walking may well be a challenge, and forget about carrying anything heavy.

The discomfort experienced will vary though with some experiencing only a mild discomfort while others suffer severe joint pains. Several factors add to postpartum joint discomfort such as picking up and laying down your baby and carrying your baby around throughout the day. Also, as babies tend to have an abnormal sleeping pattern during the first couple of months it makes proper rest almost impossible if you are alone at home during the day.

How To Alleviate Joint Pains

For new mothers, the most normal joint pain they will encounter is back pain. Apply topical ointments on the joints to help relieve pain. You should try and apply ointments for joint pain once your baby has fallen asleep to give you ample time to relax and rest. You should also be aware of your body's position during breastfeeding. Being in an awkward position for a prolonged period of time can cause severe joint pain. Place plenty of pillows on the back and shoulder area so that you won't need to constantly support the weight of the baby. If you feel any discomfort during breastfeeding quickly shift your body to a much better position. You can also take supplements to alleviate the pain. Always speak to your physician and research supplement manufacturers to find products made with safe, natural ingredients.

Final Thoughts On Joint Pain

Joint pain after pregnancy is normal. Fortunately, you can take the proper steps to help alleviate it. Using topical ointments, adopting a proper body stance and position as well as adequate rest can help in relieving joint pains.
